About Our School:

St Columban’s Primary School is situated within the Newcastle inner city suburb of Mayfield.  The children of  St. Columban's are drawn from the neighbouring suburbs of  Carrington, Tighes Hill, Hamilton, Maryville, Islington and Warabrook.

St. Columban’s Mayfield is a multicultural community.

Twenty two different nationalities, including a significant number of  Sudanese Refugees and Pacific Islanders  blend  together to form a school community, that is culturally aware and accepting of others.

Even though a large number of families suffer a high level of unemployment and financial hardship,a virtue of tolerance and mateship helps overcome these hardships.

The learning environment, at St. Columban's reflects sensitivity to individual needs. A sense of achievement and positive self worth is promoted by the whole school  Community to give each child the ability to enhance his/her own desire to learn, and to become life long learners. The Core Values of St Columban’s Primary School Mayfield reflect those of it’s Dominican tradition – truth, integrity, care, compassion, respect and acceptance.  Our School Vision is “Empowering all to reach their full potential within a diverse community through the richness and truth of Christ’s Message”.

This vision is evident visibly and actively in the schools relationship with the parish and wider community.  The school supports and attends community initiatives such as Parish Masses and functions, Heart Foundation, Waterwatch, Law Week, Cultural activities, Pavement Art, Breakfast club, John Hunter Hospital, Catholic Missions Caritas, St Vincent de Paul, Aged Care Facilities and Pre-schools.

St Columban’s achieves its mission by providing a Catholic Christian environment where our children’s social, cultural, emotional, spiritual and intellectual growth is nurtured.  In partnership with parents, the prime educators of their children, we endeavour to provide an atmosphere where all children will be happy, well adjusted members of the community.

Some unique features of St Columban’s would be its multicultural community with many families from Asia, the Pacific Islands and Africa as well as indigenous Australians.  Every class integrates hearing impaired children from our Partner School, St Dominic’s Centre, which is located on our campus.  We also share a campus with the local Catholic High School, San Clemente, which allows for smooth transition from Primary to Secondary school.  The school employs a Learning Support Teacher and two learning support assistants to assist children who many find learning difficult.  A pastoral support worker assists families and children in need whilst our English as Second Language (ESL) teacher provides programmes for our 65 children who have backgrounds other than English.

A very successful LOTE program has been running in the school for many years and a wide range of sporting activities have achieved excellent results for the school over many years.  The opportunity for children to be involved in guitar lessons, choir, drama and other creative art areas, sports of all kinds is available at St Columban’s.

The school plays an important part in the community because it is a “village within a village”.  St Columban’s is a snapshot of the wider community and therefore allows children to learn the necessary strategies to be an active, accepting and culturally aware future citizen.

The staff and students are actively involved in the community at all levels.

We provide a very informative well prepared Kindergarten Transition programme which includes a playgroup during Term 4.  This allows young parents to gain confidence and mix with other parents reducing isolation and anxiety.   It also provides tips on healthy eating and healthy lifestyle.

St Columban’s is a culturally aware community that endeavours to give the opportunity to build individuals understanding and acceptance of others
