Principal's Welcome

Welcome to St Columban's Primary School, Mayfield. We are a very unique school community that boasts the highest multicultural population of any primary school, per head, in the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. It is a community with a strong pastoral commitment to the families within our care and strong wider community ties.

The core values of St Columban's Primary School reflect those of its Dominican tradition – truth, integrity, care, compassion, respect and acceptance. Our School Vision is "Empowering all to reach their full potential within a diverse community through the richness and truth of Christ's Message". This vision is evident visibly and actively in the school’s relationship with the parish and wider community. The school supports and attends community initiatives such as Parish Masses and functions, Heart Foundation, Waterwatch, cultural activities, Pavement Art, Breakfast Club, Catholic Mission’s Caritas, St Vincent de Paul, Aged Care facilities and pre-schools.

St Columban's achieves its mission by providing a Catholic Christian environment where our children's social, cultural, emotional, spiritual and intellectual growth is nurtured. In partnership with parents, the prime educators of their children, we endeavour to provide an atmosphere where all children will be happy, well-adjusted members of the community.

Some unique features of St Columban's are its multicultural community with many families from Asia, the Pacific Islands and Africa as well as indigenous Australians. We share a campus with the local Catholic High School, San Clemente, which allows for a smooth transition from primary to secondary school. We provide a very informative well prepared Kindergarten transition program which includes a playgroup during Term 4. This allows young parents to gain confidence and mix with other parents reducing isolation and anxiety. It also provides tips on healthy eating and a healthy lifestyle.

The school employs a Learning Support Teacher and three learning support assistants to work with children who find learning difficult. Our English as an Additional Language (EALD) teacher provides programs for our 65 children who have backgrounds other than English. The opportunity for children to be involved in keyboard lessons, choir, drama and other creative art areas along with sports of all kinds is available at St Columban's.

St Columban’s is a Gifted Education Lead school. Teachers have extensive professional development in catering to the needs of high potential learners. Our students have the opportunity to take part in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and maths) activities in a designated flexible learning area.

St Columban's is a culturally aware community that endeavours to give the opportunity to build individual’s understanding and acceptance of others. The school plays an important part in the community because it is a "village within a village". St Columban's is a snapshot of the wider community and therefore allows children to learn the necessary strategies to be active, accepting and culturally aware future citizens.

God bless,

Jennifer Crichton
